Back to Wenatchee

After saying goodbye to Cassidy the curious cat,we packed up and left Newport. He made one more attempt to sneak into the 5th wheel while we were in and out doing the last minute packing.  Last night Jack had to scramble outside in a thunderstorm to put our chairs under cover before the rain drenched them.

We're spending one night at the Wenatchee County RV Park.  We stayed here a few weeks ago and it is a clean park with wide level spaces. The only real drawback is it's proximity to Highway 2 and road noise. The cherry picking season is in full swing. There is a migrant worker tent camp set up just outside the boundary of the park. Hopefully they are too tired from picking cherries all day to create any mischief tonight. The camp looks clean and well managed so I doubt we'll have any problems.

We leave in the morning for LaConnor. I don't think they have internet connections at the park we are staying in so we'll have to go into LaConnor and find a hot spot.
Current weather is sunny, breezy and temps around 75.

Parade # 3 and Rodeo

New Cowboy HatCalf RopingCassidy

Jack and I attended our 3rd parade of the season yesterday. There was the usual contingent of tractors and firetrucks. This parade had a large Shriner turnout as well as dozens of fancy horses which we saw later at the rodeo. The funniest thing to watch... the kids scrambling for the candy thrown along the parade route. They come prepared with plastic bags for gathering their loot..obviously not their first rodeo.

And speaking of rodeos..we bought our tickets and sat in the bleachers to watch calf roping and bronco riding. After about an hour we decided we'd had enough. The guys attempting  to stay atop the broncos must be sore and bruised by the end of the evening.  As always, people watching is a great past time.We noticed  there seems to be a high number of teenagers with babies in this town. In some cases one in a stroller, one in arms and one on the way!
One of our neighbors has three kitty's on board and this white one "Cassidy" came to visit this morning. He lost interest in us when we wouldn't open the door to let him snoop.

Today is the River Rat Rodders car show in Priest River. Another sunny day so we'll probably check it out.

Trip Downriver

We took a drive down the Idaho side of the Pend Oreille River today to a small town called Usk. The Kalispell Indians have a large buffalo ranch there. They were having a great time rolling in the grass and grazing in the sun. (The buffalo, not the indians). There is a community pool and health facility near the buffalo ranch and  outside we saw some kids barbqueing. We walked on over and they asked us what we wanted so we had ourselves a free lunch of hot dogs, potato salad and brownies. Apparently the center was hosting a career day...lots of firemen and cops.

The Newport Rodeo is this weekend. Not sure which day we'll attend.

Chewelah Country Club

We woke up to sun yesterday and made the drive back over Flowery Trail Pass to Chewelah. Jack's brother Gary's former in laws have a place on the golf course there and reserved a tee time for us. The course is beautiful and winds through canyons and up and down some impressive hills. Our golf cart was purple with a big Husky "W" emblem on the front. My Cougar daughter would have  been appalled. I started out playing four of the best holes of golf ever but it quickly disintegrated to crap. This course has 27 holes...the only one of it's kind in Eastern Washington. Wild turkeys run across the course and there are moose and other wildlife as well.
Back over the pass in the evening. Just past the Summit there is some sort of commune or encampment. Old trailers and tents, a few outhouses and a sign that says "Zodiac Festival, All Welcome..No Guns" Apparently the numbers swell into the hundreds over the weekends but we only saw two guys sitting in chairs staring off into the distant mountains.
Last night shortly after we climbed into bed I heard what I thought was a bucket of water being dumped on the roof of the 5th wheel. It was rain! Jack jumped up and closed the vents as the rain was dripping in. It was an impressive downpour.
Some high clouds this morning that look like they will burn off.

Priest Lake Idaho Road Trip

The sun came out this morning so we took a trip up the east side of  Priest Lake. The lake is 19 miles long through heavily forested terrain. There are a few communities built along the lake which we assumed were Summer homes as they would be very very remote in the Winter.  There are over 400 miles of  groomed snowmobile trails as well as the Priest Lake Golf Club which serves as a Cross Country Ski site in Winter. We stopped at The Blue Diamond Marina and checked out some of the nice boats moored there.

In the 1920's an actress,Nell Shipman, built a movie camp called Lions Head Lodge at the north end of the lake. She produced her own silent films and maintained a menagerie of wild animals which included bears. The lodge no longer exists and was replaced by a campground.

Back to the RV Park via the town of Priest River which is at the confluence of the Priest and Pend Oreille Rivers.

First Day of Summer

You can see by this picture that the truck is sitting in a big puddle from the rain this morning. The weather  forecast on TV behind me states there has already been an inch of rain in the Idaho Panhandle this morning with another inch expected!
We spend yesterday, which was mostly sunny, inside watching the U.S. Open Golf Tournament from Pebble Beach. Not sure what the plan is for today.

Chickens for Kenya

Finally a sunny day. We went to the Elk Pioneer Days where the parade featured tractors and firetrucks. These seem to be a popular entry in small  town parades. Then over to the Foxwood Antique Fair which was held on the grounds of a Victorian style house. Jack bought a fishing reel. There were some African dancers, who I assume made jewelry as well as chanting and dancing.  A sign at their booth stated "Chickens for Kenya". I didn't ask.... and there were no chickens in the booth. There were quite a few vendors with nice antiques. Some really cool old furniture, old milk cans, vintage dishes and jewelry etc. Too bad I need the room in the truck for rocks or I would have picked something up.

The Sign Says It All

Still raining this morning so we decided to take a road trip over Flower Trail Pass (elevation 4046) to Chewelah (pronounced Chew Wee La). The God Fearing Brothers have quite the auto center on the outskirts of town.  Chewelah means "gartersnake" in Spokane Indian language. It has the only 27 hole golf course in Eastern Washington..Chewelah Golf and Country Club.. and it is a beautiful, well maintained course with enormous, gorgeous homes surrounding it. There is also a casino in town where we stopped for lunch...(okay we played some slots too)

This whole area is part of what is called The Selkirk Loop, which extends into Canada.  http://www.milebymile.com/main/article_105.html

We won't do the whole loop but hope to drive up the east side of Priest Lake when the sun comes out again.

Rodeos,Pioneer Days and Rain

This picture of our campsite was taken the last day we saw some sun on Tuesday. It is currently raining and about 40 degrees.
This weekend we may attend the Elk WA Pioneer Days which is in the nearby town of...Elk!. The Newport Rodeo is the weekend of June 25-26.If it stops raining  today I may walk into the town of Newport which is about 1/4 mile away. Otherwise....thank God for the Golf Channel.

Newport Campground

Our view

We left Crescent Bar about 7:30 this morning and arrived at The American Kampground in Newport in the early afternoon. Decided to take a spot down by the river even though it means I need to walk to the clubhouse for wifi. The view is looking across the Pend Oreille River to Idaho. This is a clean well kept RV Park and not very crowded. We drove across the bridge into Idaho and diesel fuel is only $2.96 gallon!

Hot Today

Today was one of those days where you ask yourself  "Where did the day go?"  It was hot...probably close to 90...but it's a dry heat... lol...

We had breakfast in the club house ... French Toast, sausage, biscuits and gravy. Floated around the pool for about an hour then unfurled the awning and set up our chairs to watch the activity on the river.  Our new rule..Happy Hour starts an hour early on Sunday.

There are several groups camped here that attended the Tom Petty concert at The Gorge downriver last night. Last night was a beautiful evening. Jack took a scooter ride to  "downtown" Crescent Bar, which consists of one bar, a campground and two stores, and said most of the tenters have left and the boatlaunch is almost empty. The 206'ers and 425'ers have gone home..  ( Or another favorite expression used by the locals here is "coasties" when refering to people from the westside)

We leave here on Tuesday and head north of Spokane about 25 miles to an RV spot in Newport WA on the Pend Oreille (pronounced pon der ray) River.

Small Town Parade

One of many tractorsBobby's truckFire engineUnicycles

We drove to Ephrata today to watch the parade. It was their summer festival.. Sage and Sun, or Sand and Soap?..not sure...anyway, Bobby C. got his old truck running and we wanted to see him in the parade.
Things are hoppin' at Crescent Bar for the weekend. The RV park is almost full. Lots of boats and jet skis out on the river and people getting sunburned. Jack and I attended the Ice Cream Social at the clubhouse...got ice cream but weren't too social actually.

Grant County PUD and Crescent Bar Lease

Baby Kestrel watching me do laundry

This was in the Times today. It is a big issue over here. In fact, a sign on the local bar...The Sandtrap, states "Please do not discuss the lease while in the bar"

PUD rejects leaseholders' bid to stay on Crescent Bar Island

Seattle Times

No thanks, the Grant County Public Utility District (PUD) replied when the 415 leaseholders at the controversial Crescent Bar Island on Wednesday proposed that they get a new 40-year lease.

The 160-acre island is in one of the most gorgeous locations in the state, with basalt cliffs rising hundreds of feet on one side and an advertised 300 days of sunshine a year.

On April 26, the PUD commissioners had voted not to renew a 50-year lease. Over the years, a 110-unit condo complex was built on the public island, and 305 trailer homes were parked and then expanded into what amounted to permanent residences.

The leaseholders Wednesday told the PUD they had come up with a "win-win solution." They were "willing to pay $40 million over 40 years" that would be used for public improvements.

But that really comes down to each leaseholder paying an average of $2,410 a year, or $201 a month, for prime recreational land right on the Columbia River.

The 50-year deal was a good one for the leaseholders, most of whom have 206 or 425 area codes and used the places for summer vacations. There are 65 year-round leaseholders living on the island.

Most of the leases were for $33 a year, with a few, newer condos paying up to $626 a year.

Some area locals had complained the island had become a private enclave, with a chain-link fence between a designated public beach and trailer homes, and with entry to those homes through a gate.

The PUD wants the trailer homes gone by June 2012 and plans to take over the condos, as allowed by the lease.

Some trailer-home leaseholders say it would be nearly impossible to move their expanded places and fear they'll become homeless. Some say they'll be stuck with mortgages and nothing to show for them.

A spokeswoman for the PUD said the agency's decision was "final" and it already had filed a shoreline-management plan with the federal government and would be holding open houses to discuss the public retaking of the island.

Speaking for leaseholders, Nancy Polky, of Kent, who owns a condo at the island with her husband, John Polky, said she hoped the PUD might reconsider once it heard from the public.

The leaseholders unveiled a plan in which their new lease payments would be used to build everything from a boardwalk around the island to a new overnight campground with restroom and shower facilities.

A drawing of the proposed plan shows the parked trailer homes would remain where they are.

Polky said she thought an average of $2,410 annual lease payments was fair market value.

About the potential of a lawsuit by leaseholders against the PUD, Polky said, "We're not at that point."

The PUD, meanwhile, plans to hold open houses in June and July to discuss recreational improvements to the island.

It said it's sticking by its decision รข€” "to dedicate this unique and important property for full public use."

Scouting Trip to Leavenworth

PinnaclesIcicle River..LeavenworthMetal works fountain

Rained all night but we woke up to sun. We made a scouting trip to the Leavenworth/Lake Wenatchee area to see if there were any RV parks we'd be interested in for future use.  One park had beautiful spots along the river and it was a nice park but the lady in the office said we would'nt be able to get our 5th wheel into any of them. Jack measured them off and  did not agree but we didn't argue with her and left. We drove partway up the Icicle River Road and there is still snow on the mountain tops.

There is a shop in Leavenworth called Metal Works where I took the picture of the fish fountain. They have incredible fountains and metal sculptures. Ate lunch at Krystals where Jack ran in to another retired Seattle Firefighter.

The skies are sunny at the moment but there are some black clouds heading this way and another threat of  rain  and thunderstorms..

Highlander Golf Course

This is where Rick, Jack and I played golf today....beautiful course overlooking the river  with the mountains in the background. It was a fairly hilly challenging course    http://highlandergolfclub.com/

Monday June 7

Me, Casey, Jana

Woke up this morning to some bright blue skies and sun.
On Saturday, Rick's son Casey and his friend Ahmed drove over from Ellensburg to spend the night and play some golf with Jack and Rick. The lady at the golf pro shop saw my bracelet bead score keeper and asked if she could show it to some of the ladies on Ladies Day Tuesday. I took her some samples...it would be great to get some orders!  While the guys played golf, Jana and I got in some pool time along with a dozen bratty kids who splashed us and generally hogged the whole pool. This was while their parents sat by quietly and did nothing...rude.

Today is Rick and Jana's last day here. We are driving to a golf course we saw near Wenatchee to check it out.

Sunny Saturday

Yesterday morning it was raining so hard there were puddles forming underneath the 5th wheel. Jack and I drove up to Chelan to the Mill Bay Casino for a few hours.

This morning it is beautful and should be a great day for golf and swimming. The water level in the Columbia River flucuates on the beach here and is quite low this morning.  There are two dams the Wanapum (Vantage) and the Rocky Reach ( Wenatchee) that control the levels.

I checked the calendar this morning and we still have 10 days here. So far I have not found a place where I would want to spend an entire month although we have been to some wonderful places. I guess I like the change of scenery and get antsy to move after a few days.

Thunderstorm

These pictures were taken after a huge thunderstorm blew across the river. Rick,Jana,Jack and I sat outside and watched the black clouds moving in...then some minor sprinkles of rain and finally a full blown rain/lightening/thunderstorm. Cool to watch until we started getting wet. Then we moved inside and watched a movie.

I am currently at the club house where the wifi connection is stronger. It is so hot in here I am hurrying through this so I can get out! Jack and I were able to move to a better RV spot with a river view yesterday afternoon. We're getting good at packing up our stuff in a hurry. We had the 5th wheel hitched up and were waiting on the roadway for the people to vacate the spot we wanted. They were slooooowpokes.

Current temps are about 65,slightly breezy and some patchy clouds. Hope to get out this afternoon and play 9 at the golf course in Quincy.

Here is our future itinerary as we know it so far:

American Kampground Spokane WA June 15-June 29
Potlatch RV Park LaConnor WA June 30-July 4
Swinomish Casino RV Park near Anacortes WA July 4 and 5
Fall City WA July 6
Fort Flagler State Park near Port Townsend WA July 7-July 17
Possibly back to Seattle area July 17-22
Barrier Dam Campground near Chehalis WA July 22-25

After that.... unknown and not planned. I'm pitching for either Montana or somewhere on the ocean.

Moving Day?

Rick and JanaCondos at Crescent Bar

It rained all night and we left our chairs out...Jack and I have been eyeballing some people "across the street" who are scheduled to leave today. They have a prime spot overlooking the river and we may zip into it when  they leave.

We had a pleasant evening with Rick and Jana after their arrival yesterday afternoon. Rick has joined the ranks of retired Firefighters and is looking forward to a life of leisure and travel in their 5th wheel.

The weather forecast for this week is not very good. We may not get out for any golf until next week.

Crescent Bar

We made it to Crescent Bar but were unable to get a spot overlooking the river   :(  At least the pool is open this year. Hopefully we can move over to a better spot when someone vacates this week. We'll be here until the 15th.

Weather is warm....70's and overcast. Waiting for Rick and Jana to arrive so the party can begin!
